TL; DR
  • Sony announced the WF-1000XM6, priced at $329.99 in the US, which is $30 higher than the WF-1000XM5 at launch.
  • Sony claims up to 25% better ANC, powered by the new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e (3x faster than XM5’s chip).
  • Other upgrades include updated 8.4 mm drivers, improved DAC/amplifier, a 10-band EQ, better call tech with AI beamforming and bone conduction, and a redesigned fit, while battery life stays the same at 8 hours (24 hours total with case).

Sony has officially refreshed its flagship true wireless earbuds with the WF-1000XM6. The WF-1000XM5 launched back in 2023, so this is Sony’s first major update in almost three years. Sony has kept the changes practical, with most improvements going into ANC, sound processing, call quality, and fit.

What’s new with the Sony WF-1000XM6?

Sony WF-1000XM6

Sony says the WF-1000XM6 delivers up to 25% better overall noise reduction, with stronger performance in mid-to-high frequencies. Sony uses a new dual-processor setup this year: the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e and the Integrated Processor V2. Sony says QN3e is 3x faster than the processor used in the WF-1000XM5.

Sony also upgrades the processing pipeline, with 32-bit audio processing on the Integrated Processor V2, compared to 24-bit on the XM5. Along with that, Sony includes Adaptive NC Optimizer and an expanded microphone setup to keep ANC performance more consistent across different environments and fit conditions.

Sony has also redesigned the earbuds. The WF-1000XM6 now uses an elongated oval-style ergonomic shape, plus a matte finish that improves grip when adjusting the earbuds. Sony also updated the sealing ear tips to improve isolation.

The trade-off is size: the earbuds and case are slightly larger and taller than the compact WF-1000XM5. Weight is listed at around 6.5 g per earbud. Sony also keeps the IPX4 rating for sweat and rain resistance.

On sound quality, Sony uses updated 8.4 mm dynamic drivers, tuned in collaboration with mastering engineers. Sony also upgrades the DAC and amplifier, with the company claiming improvements in clarity, detail, and dynamic range.

The WF-1000XM6 keeps the same codec mix, with Bluetooth 5.3 and support for SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 through LE Audio. Sony also keeps DSEE Extreme for AI upscaling and 360 Reality Audio support.

A notable software upgrade is the EQ, which now becomes a 10-band custom EQ inside the Sony Sound Connect app, compared to the 5-band EQ on the XM5.

Sony has also focused on calls. The WF-1000XM6 uses beamforming, bone conduction sensing, wind noise reduction, and advanced AI processing for voice clarity. Sony also mentions improved antennas and stronger connectivity, along with multipoint support, Speak-to-Chat, and a fit test inside the app. The charging case supports wireless charging.
