OpenAI has released a new AI agent that can conduct multi-step research on the internet and present the findings in an easy-to-understand manner. The tool is called Deep Research, and it is available to ChatGPT Pro users. The company claims the tool “accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours.”

Presently, AI-enabled voice assistants like Gemini and Siri can provide guidance on complicated subjects. However, most of them can’t perform multi-step tasks, except the agentic AI tool available on the latest Galaxy S25 series\(based on Gemini).

Deep Research Is Based On OpenAI’s o3 Model

However, OpenAI’s Deep Research agent can conduct multi-step research. All users have to do is give it a prompt, like “compile a research report on how the global retail industry has changed in the past few years.” Within a few minutes, ChatGPT will analyze and synthesize information from hundreds of online sources to create a comprehensive report.

The Deep Research agent runs on a version of the upcoming OpenAI o3 model optimized for web browsing and data analysis. It uses reasoning to interpret and analyze volumes of texts, images, and PDFs (implying that it supports multimodal inputs), pivoting from one search point to another as needed to compile the required report.

Deep Research Generates Detailed Reports In A Few Minutes

Obviously, going through so much information can take a while, which is why Deep Research takes a while to generate responses. As shown in the example on the website, the tool provides an outline of the research it is going to conduct, including related aspects. You can monitor progress (with a summary of the steps along with proper citations) in the activity section toward the right of the window (on a desktop).

To use the agentic AI tool, select ‘Deep Research’ in the box where you enter the prompt. You can also attach spreadsheets or images to add more context to your questions. OpenAI says that Deep Research can take five to 30 minutes to complete its task. Moreover, the tool is for multi-faceted, domain-specific inquiries with critical depth and detail.

We can see how the tool can help market professionals, scholars, psychologists, or other professionals or companies that have to deal with large sets of data daily. Individuals can also put the tool to good use, such as for personalized product or service recommendations.

The Deep Research version available for Pro users can respond to up to 100 queries per month. Further, Plus and Team members will get access next, followed by Enterprise.
