On Monday, OpenAI announced a new feature for the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, which can now read user responses. The feature could be helpful for users chatting with the tool on the go. It is now available on OpenAI’s app on Android and iOS and the app’s web client. Here’s more about the Read Aloud feature.

More About ChatGPT’s Read Aloud Feature

ChatGPT’s Read Aloud works in 37 languages for both GPT-4 and GPT 3.5 users. The multimodal chatbot detects the language of queries and starts reading out the response in the same language. On the Android and iOS app, users should tap and hold the message and then hit the “Read Aloud” button to make the tool speak out the response. Users also get several playback options, such as play, pause, or rewind the audio response to listen to a part of the response.

How Does Read Aloud Work?

On the web, ChatGPT will include a speaker icon below the response, clicking on which users should be able to hear the response. Even though ChatGPT allows users to ask their queries through voice prompts, the latest feature unlocks verbal responses. It is important to mention that OpenAI revealed the new ChatGPT feature right after its competitor, Anthropic, released a similar feature to its AI model. This is a step toward replacing the traditional voice assistants users have on their smartphones.
