After months of rumors and anticipation, Elon Musk’s Tesla has finally launched its first electric vehicle in the country: the Tesla Model Y. It will be available in two models: rear-wheel drive and long-range rear-wheel drive, with no option to upgrade to an all-wheel drive option (at least for now).
The completely built units (CBU) are imported from Tesla’s largest factory in China. Reports suggest that the automaker has already imported six units of the electric vehicle in India, which could be used as display or test drive vehicles at the company’s first experience center in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai.

- Glacier Blue Paint: Rs. 1,25,000

Tesla Model Y: Why Is The EV So Expensive In India?

Below is a price table comparing the Model Y’s starting price in India to those in key global markets, including the United States, China, and Germany.
India | United States | China | Germany | |
Starting Price | ~ $69,820 | $44,990 | ~ $36,760 | ~ $53,720 |
It is clear that the Tesla Model Y is significantly more expensive in India than it costs in global markets (almost twice as much as the EV costs in China), and the primary reason behind this is the extensive import duty imposed by the Indian government and the logistical costs incurred by the company in shipping the units all the way from China to India.

Tesla Model Y: India Bookings And Delivery Schedule

With the launch of its first experience center in BKC, Mumbai, Tesla India has also started accepting bookings from buyers.

The two-step booking process might be new for some buyers, but that’s how the company has decided to make its vehicles available to Indian buyers.
Deliveries of the vehicle are expected to commence sometime toward the end of the third calendar quarter of 2025.
