Tesla is finally coming to India! The American EV-maker’s entry to India has been a longstanding wait but it is finally coming to an end! Tesla has announced that it will be opening its first experience centre or showroom in Mumbai on July 15.

Tesla announced that it will commence operations in India with its first showroom in Mumbai, opening on July 15. This is said to be followed by a store launch in Delhi. The launch of the cars, however, is still some time away, according to reports.

Details About Tesla’s Entry in India

While Tesla did explore the idea of manufacturing cars locally in India for a very long time, the cars that will be sold in India will initially be imported CBUs. While the government has also tried to get Tesla to set up manufacturing in India with schemes like the EV Policy with reduced tariffs, Tesla has since said that it is not interested in manufacturing the cars in India. This means that the Tesla cars will attract a full 110 percent tariff in India.

The first model to be launched in India will most likely be the Model Y, multiple reports have suggested. The latest facelift of the Tesla Model Y has also been spotted testing on Indian roads in the last few months.

According to a report in Reuters, custom records also show imported Tesla cars, chargers, and accessories worth close to USD 1 million coming to India between January to June 2025. This list included six units of the Tesla Model Y, along with several superchargers.

Tesla’s launch in India has been a long awaited affair in the automotive industry. While the anticipation is that the Tesla cars will be premium offerings in our market, the pricing will be the key factor in deciding if Tesla becomes a mainstream brand in India or not.
