TL; DR
  • According to the Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset — Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 — will feature second-generation Oryon CPU cores.
  • In addition to the powerful CPU cores, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 could also benefit from LPDDR6 RAM, which offers around 30 to 40% improvement in speed.
  • With other improvements, the GPU should provide up to 30% better performance when compared with the Adreno 830 GPU on the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite is among the most powerful chipsets for Android smartphones. However, that could change with the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. Per a renowned tipster, the upcoming chipset could offer a major CPU and GPU upgrade over the current-generation model.

Found on several smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S25 (review) lineup, the OnePlus 13 (review), the Xiaomi 15, and the iQOO 13 (review), the chipset offers tremendous CPU and GPU performance, allowing handsets to process several GenAI features on the device, along with demanding video games and other graphic-intensive workflows.

Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 To Feature Oryon CPU Cores And LPDDR6 RAM

According to the Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset — Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 — will feature second-generation Oryon CPU cores. The tipster also adds how the Qualcomm-developed cores may deliver up to 25% better performance.

In addition to the powerful CPU cores, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 could also benefit from LPDDR6 RAM, which offers around 30 to 40% improvement in speed (comparing JEDEC’s LPDDR6 variants ranging from 10.667Gbps and 14.4Gbps with Samsung’s LPDDR5X that maxes out at 10.7Gbps).

While the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2-powered smartphones should feature LPDDR6 RAM, other handsets coming in the second half of the year should also benefit from the faster memory. However, it is up to the OEM to equip their handsets with the latest LPDDR6 or stick with the LPDDR5x RAM.

Snapdragon 8 Elite 2’s GPU To Offer A Significant Upgrade

Along with the CPU, the GPU should also get a significant update. Per the tipster, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2’s GPU should get a larger 16MB independent cache. With other improvements, the GPU should provide up to 30% better performance when compared with the Adreno 830 GPU on the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Although Qualcomm hasn’t confirmed the date for its annual Snapdragon Summit event (where it announced the flagship chipset for the upcoming year), it usually takes place in the month of October. Around this time, we should see smartphone manufacturers teasing their Snapdragon 8 Elite 2-powered handsets, with a launch in the fourth quarter.

However, in December 2024, the tipster claimed that Qualcomm could fast-track the chip’s development and release it early. Reports also suggest that Qualcomm will stick with TSMC’s 3nm fabrication technology for 2025 before finally moving on to the 2nm manufacturing process in 2026.
