TL; DR
  • According to the Korean publication The Elec, the first OLED screen MacBook Pro models will arrive next year, i.e., in 2026.
  • Given that the MacBook Pro is one of the best-selling notebooks, Samsung is targeting around three to five million shipments per year.
  • The MacBook Pro with an OLED screen could come with a punch-hole screen (instead of the notch on the current models).
  • While an OLED MacBook Pro could come out as soon as 2026, you might have to wait for an OLED MacBook Air for longer.

For a long time now, Apple has been working on OLED displays for its MacBooks. Currently, the top-tier M4 MacBook Pro models come with a Liquid Retina XDR display based on IPS technology with mini-LED backlighting. On the other hand, the MacBook Air models rely on IPS technology with LED-backlit displays. In a market with OLED screen notebooks, Apple sure has some catching up to do. However, that might not happen soon.

Samsung To Supply Two-Stack OLED Panels For MacBook Pro Models

According to the Korean publication The Elec, the first OLED screen MacBook Pro models will arrive next year, i.e., in 2026. The publication cites supply chain sources, claiming that Samsung will supply the OLED panels for the MacBook Pro models. It goes on to say that the Korean tech giant is already working on samples for Apple and should enter full-scale production next year (perhaps in the first few months).

Given that the MacBook Pro is one of the best-selling notebooks, Samsung is targeting around three to five million shipments per year. The OLED displays won’t just improve the visual experience; they should also result in some key changes in the device’s design.

What Will Samsung’s OLED Panels Might Make The MacBook Pro Brighter, Lighter, And Thinner

For instance, the MacBook Pro with an OLED screen could come with a punch-hole screen (instead of the notch on the current models). In addition, the upcoming MacBook Pro models could be thinner and, more importantly, lighter than the existing models, all thanks to Samsung’s thinner OLED displays. The two-stack panel design should also unlock higher peak brightness.

However, we are also concerned about how the new panels could increase the prices of the Pro models. Moreover, the OLED panels could give the MacBook Pro one of the most-awaited overhauls in a while, and we’re excited (rather curious) to see how Apple markets the new OLED displays.

Where’s The OLED MacBook Air, Though?

While an OLED MacBook Pro could come out as soon as 2026, you might have to wait for an OLED MacBook Air for longer. How much, you ask? The report mentions that Apple might hold off integrating OLED panels in MacBook Airs until 2029, i.e., four years from now. If you’ve been waiting to get your hands on a MacBook Air with a shiny OLED screen, forget about it (at least for now).
