TL; DR
  • The rumored 48MP telephoto lens for the iPhone 17 Pro could boost detail and match the resolution of the main and ultra-wide cameras.
  • Leaks suggest up to 8X optical zoom via moving lens elements, though some reports point to a more modest 3.5X base.
  • Sony has tried similar tech with compromises in image quality, and Apple will need to avoid the same pitfalls.

Apple’s next high-end iPhone could give photographers and content creators a serious reason to upgrade. Leaks from multiple sources suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro will debut with a telephoto camera overhaul, potentially marking the biggest improvement to its zoom capabilities in years.

The standout rumor is a 48MP telephoto sensor, up from the 12MP unit in the iPhone 16 Pro. That change would bring the telephoto in line with the resolution of the phone’s main and ultra-wide cameras, allowing for more detailed zoom shots and cleaner image crops.

What’s less clear is exactly how far this new lens will zoom. Some reports indicate the hardware could deliver up to 8X optical zoom using a variable focal length system. This design would allow the lens to physically adjust, switching between zoom ranges, such as 5X and 8X, without relying on digital magnification. If true, the change may also explain why the next Pro models are rumored to have a larger camera bump.

Other chatter points to a less ambitious setup, with the Pro model offering 3.5X optical zoom but using the higher resolution to achieve longer “hybrid” zoom ranges. In that case, it could be better than the current 5X optical zoom.

Additional camera-related features are said to include improved video tools for vloggers, a professional camera app, and ANOTHER dedicated physical control button for photography.

Apple’s first, but not the industry’s first

Sony Xperia

If Apple does pursue continuous optical zoom, it won’t be the first smartphone maker to try. Sony already does a similar design, but their version relies on very small image sensors and narrow apertures, which leads to significant drops in image quality, particularly in low light.

More recently, Huawei took a different path, using one sensor but two separate moving lenses to achieve multiple optical zoom levels, but this approach cropped the image on one of the lenses, reducing overall detail.

However, it is truly a revolutionary innovation, and also better than the continuous zoom thing, as it features the largest sensor on any smartphone telephoto camera. Yes, the telephoto sensor on the Huawei is as large as the iPhone 17 Pro’s main camera.

Do we really need continuous zoom on smartphones?

I would argue that true continuous zoom may never be practical in smartphones due to size and complexity constraints. Instead, the current gold standard is a single periscope zoom lens with a large sensor and bright aperture, a strategy seen in devices like the vivo X200 Ultra, Or a dual periscope zoom, as seen in the OPPO’s Find X8 Ultra.

Until Apple takes the stage, the exact details remain in the realm of speculation. Apple is expected to reveal the full iPhone 17 range, including the standard, Air, Pro, and Pro Max, at an event reportedly set for September 9. Invitations for the keynote are rumored to go out on August 26
