The Tata Altroz Racer is a model that has recently hit the market with both aesthetic updates as well as upgraded engine size compared to the regular Tata Altroz. Its closest competitor is the Hyundai i20 N Line which has been out of any direct competition in the Indian market for quite some time now. Here we pit the entry-level trim versions of these spirited hatchbacks to find out which one is the better buy.

Pricing

The Tata Altroz Racer R1 is estimated at Rs 9.49 lakh, while the most expensive car of this list is Hyundai i20 N Line N6 at Rs 9.99 lakh, thus arriving at a price difference of Rs 50,000. Besides, there’s an automatic variant available with the i20 N Line at a additional Rs 1.15 lakh. We will proceed to analyze various aspects to determine whether the amount of money that is charged for the i20 N Line is reasonable.

Design and Dimension

As with any performance-inspired vehicles, the Tata Altroz Racer and Hyundai i20 N Line give off a more aggressive look as compared to their regular models. On the exterior side, ‘red inserts on the bumper and side skirts’ add to the sportiness of the i20 N Line. However, the last one, the Altroz Racer comes with white strips which signify this car as a Racer. The cars also get dual-tip exhausts for that pumped up look, however, the i20 N Line gets unique wheels while the Altroz Racer gets a black out treatment on existing ones.

In terms of dimensions and width, Hyundai i20 N Line is 3995mm in length and 1775mm in width, and Altroz Racer is 3990mm in length and 1755mm in width. Its wheelbase is larger at 2580 mm compared with the Altroz Racer’s 2501 mm; The boot space of the i20 N Line stands at 311-litres and its height is 1505mm, whereas, the Altroz Racer offers 345-litres boot space and is taller at 1523mm.

Features

However, even the Altroz Racer and the i20 N Line are starting models and still come with a host of features. Hyundai i20 N Line N6 has headlamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touch screen infotainment system with wireless Apple and Android Auto compatibility, semi-digital cluster, climate control, rear AC vents, 6 airbags, auto folding electric ORVMs, a rear parking camera, sunroof, tyre pressure monitor, a rear defogger, 6 speakers, and cruise control.

In contrast, the Tata Altroz Racer R1 comes with projector halogen headlamps with LED DRL on the outside and 16-inch wheels, a 10. It include dual-screen 25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, analogue with multi-info display, climate control with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, reverse parking camera, sunroof, rear AC vents, 6 airbags, smart push start-stop key with smart key, 8 speakers and rear defogger, electrically folding ORVMs, and cruise control. While the i20 N Line does provide a tyre pressure monitoring system, the Altroz Racer comes equipped with a slightly larger infotainment system and more speakers.

Powertrain

Mechanically, the Tata Altroz Racer uses 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 120 PS and 170 Nm of torque is available, and it is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. On the other hand, the Hyundai i20 N Line has a 1.0L turbo petrol engine delivering 120 PS and 172 Nm torque, with 6 MT and 7 DCT option with steering wheel paddle shifters. Concerning the power output, both the Altroz Racer and i20 N Line produce comparable horsepower and torque, though the former is endowed with a slightly more substantial engine displacement, and the latter offers the prospect of an automatic gearbox.

Verdict

Combining the characteristics of the Tata Altroz Racer and the exterior features of Hyundai i20 N Line makes both cars perfect options for sporty compacts with spectacular designs. The Tata Altroz Racer emerges victorious by a whisker in this parameter of better equipment and lower price point. Nevertheless, due to its distinctive characteristics such as the tyre pressure monitoring system and an option of the automatic gearbox, the Hyundai i20 N Line is also worth considering. In conclusion, both these hatchbacks cater to each of these aspects in a highly effective manner and can be considered great value for money.
