The first ever motorcycle with CNG is going to be launched in the Indian market by Bajaj Auto, for which the company has announced a date 5th July 2024. This historic event which was to be held on June 18, 2024, with the Hon’ble minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari will happen in future. The release of this revolutionary motorcycle is a clear pointer of growing dovetailing in Bajaj’s strategy that seeks to offer affordable and less pollutive modes of transport.

Expectations about the Bajaj CNG Motorcycle

For the past few months, different test mules of the motorcycle have been spotted, and the design of the bike seems more of a commuter-oriented bike. It has simple aspects like halogen turn indicators, telescopic fork for front suspension and a monoshock unit for rear suspension. It also has features such as multi-spoke alloys, a single long seat, and disc and drum brakes. These features suggest that Bajaj is positioning this new model in the market to fit into the budget or entry level category.

Engine and Performance Details Awaited

Although Bajaj has not revealed specific engine details, it is still uncertain whether the company will recondition a current petrol engine or design a new powertrain for CNG usage. Based on the interior configurations, I think a new 110-125 cc engine which can accommodate both CNG and petrol might be used. Performance parameters are likely to be revealed in the later stage when the car goes into production.

Potential Market Impact

It is believed that the motorcycle running on CNG will result in drastic reduction in the fuel costs compared to the existing petrol engines making it inexpensive and environment-friendly. This could make it ideal for the fleets’ operators and the price-sensitive consumers in the market as well. Since EV sales are currently limited to scooters, Bajaj’s CNG motorcycle might represent a balance between ICE and electric motorcycles and thus might be the answer to increased sustainability.
