TL; DR
  • Apple’s smart glasses may launch in 2027, focusing on audio, AI features, and camera functionality without an AR display.
  • The glasses are expected to be lightweight and display-free, with support for voice commands and touch controls, setting them apart from the Vision Pro.
  • Apple aims to compete with Meta’s Ray-Bans and Google’s upcoming XR devices, and the glasses could ship between 3 to 5 million units in their first year.

Apple is reportedly working toward a 2027 launch for its long-awaited smart glasses, aiming to compete directly with products like Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses and Google’s XR eyewear. Unlike the high-end Vision Pro headset introduced in 2024, these glasses are expected to focus on simplicity, comfort, and Apple Intelligence features.

A Different Approach From Vision Pro

Representational

Rather than featuring immersive displays or full augmented reality (AR) capabilities, Apple’s upcoming glasses are said to prioritize:

  • Audio playback
  • Hands-free voice interactions
  • Photo and video capture
  • Touch-based controls

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the first generation will not include an AR display, which sets them apart from Meta’s next-gen Ray-Bans that are likely to feature such capabilities. Instead, Apple appears to be betting on a lightweight, wearable-first experience, kind of like the first generation Ray-Bans.

Design and Functionality

Representational

The glasses will likely be:

  • Lightweight and display-free
  • Powered by a custom low-power chip, possibly based on Apple Watch architecture, to efficiently handle multiple cameras and sensors
  • Offered in various frame designs and materials
  • Controlled via touch gestures and voice commands
  • Capable of basic tasks like taking pictures, recording short videos, playing music, and responding to voice prompts

It remains uncertain whether Apple will partner with existing eyewear brands like Oakley or Ray-Ban, or go fully in-house with the design.

Market Positioning and Rollout Timeline

Apple is taking a staged approach to its spatial computing ecosystem:

ProductExpected LaunchKey Features
Vision Pro Refresh2025M5 chip upgrade
Smart GlassesMid-2027Audio, camera, AI voice control, no AR display
Vision Air2027Lighter, cheaper headset with fewer sensors

The smart glasses, expected to enter mass production in mid-2027, could ship 3–5 million units in their first year, significantly more than the estimated sales of Vision Pro, which range between 500,000 and 700,000 since its launch.

Apple appears to be refining both its hardware and ecosystem behind the scenes before entering the mainstream smart glasses space. This move also positions Apple to compete with Meta, which has already seen strong sales for its smart glasses, and to pre-empt Google’s next wave of Android XR devices expected later this decade.
