Update (June 25, 2024): A new Bloomberg report suggests that Apple has refused to partner with Meta Platforms to include Meta AI (based on Llama 3) in iPhones. The publication’s sources have shared that both companies discussed adding Meta AI to iPhones in March, but the discussion hasn’t reached a formal stage since. Furthermore, Apple has no active plans to add the tool to its iPhones.
The report highlights privacy concerns as to why the iPhone maker didn’t go ahead with Meta AI. Apparently, Apple didn’t find Meta’s privacy policies “stringent enough.” This indicates that the company thinks of ChatGPT by OpenAI as a superior offering. Further, since the company already has a deal with Google to keep it the default search engine, there’s a chance that the Alphabet-owned company could also place Gemini on iPhones.
Original: In order to provide more GenAI features on its iPhones, the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple has been discussing terms of partnership with its long-term rival, Meta. According to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, both companies have discussed integrating Meta AI into Apple Intelligence.
Most recently, Meta AI has made quite a lot of headlines. Based on the Llama 3 model, the AI assistant is available on a host of apps, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, and as a chatbot on meta.ai.

A few months ago, Apple’s researchers published small language models that could theoretically handle lighter on-device tasks. However, for more complex tasks that require higher computational power, the company is turning to the AI leaders in the world. We know it has collaborated with OpenAI to make ChatGPT accessible on iPhones. However, how Meta AI could be available on iPhones isn’t unknown.
In addition to Meta, Apple is also exploring potential partnership opportunities with Google to incorporate Gemini into Apple Intelligence. If that isn’t enough, the company has also heard from startups like Perplexity and Anthropic, which could also provide their language models for processing complicated tasks.

It is important to mention that Apple might not make Meta AI or Gemini directly available on its iPhones. Instead, it could make a deal to use the underlying technology, which could respond to iPhone users using cloud computing. More details about the Apple and Meta collaboration should surface in the future if the companies decide to move forward with the idea. For now, Apple Intelligence is limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max models.
