Apple Could Release New iPad mini Later This Year: Here’s What We Expect From The Small-Screen Tablet

Last week, Cupertino-based tech giant Apple refreshed its iPads. While the iPad Air was upgraded with the M2 Silicon and a landscape front camera, the iPad Pro got a tandem OLED screen and the new M4 Silicon chip. Apple also bumped up the base storage on both models. However, the company didn’t launch a new iPad mini. Turns out, Apple might launch a new iPad mini later this year.

Expect A New iPad mini Later This Year

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (via @ApplTrack on X), Apple could release a new iPad mini by the end of this year. The last time Apple revamped the series was in September 2021. With the new iPad Air and iPad Pro, the iPad mini is now the only lineup that hasn’t been upgraded for two years. The upcoming iPad could feature an upgraded chip. However, that might be the extent of upgrades the iPad mini will receive.

iPad mini (6th Generation) Specifications

The current iteration of the iPad mini (2021) features an A15 Bionic chipset (six-core CPU and five-core GPU). Further, it features an 8.3-inch LED screen and 64GB of base storage. Regarding optics, the iPad features a 12MP (f/1.8) primary camera and a 12MP (f/2.4) ultrawide camera on the front. While the 2021 iPad mini seems a bit outdated, the lack of recent improvements leaves scope for a massive upgrade later this year.

What We Expect From The 2024 iPad mini

M Series Chip And Upgraded Base Storage

First, we expect the company to equip the iPad mini with an M series chip, like the recent iPad Air (which features the M1 and the M2 chip). Second, it could ship with a mini-LED screen. Given that the device will hit the market in early 2025, it would make sense for Apple to upgrade the base storage to 128GB.

Landscape Camera

Last but not least, we could see a landscape camera on the lineup, especially since the regular iPad (10th Generation) and the latest iPad Air (6th Generation) have the front camera on the wider edge. However, it is important to mention that these are speculations, and Apple hasn’t confirmed any of these details for the upcoming iPad mini.
